What’s even more amazing is that so many team members were not only working overtime helping in the hospital, but would go home and support members of their community who were without water and electricity. We were so grateful for the many individuals who added miles to their vehicles driving through snow and ice to pick up staff and bring them safely to work so they could relieve others who had been here for multiple shifts, sleeping in conference rooms and sofas throughout the hospital. On Pennie’s arrival to the hospital, she discovered several other staff members from across the hospital and all disciplines doing the very same thing. She packed an overnight bag without hesitation and jumped in her car and came to work knowing full well she would be at the hospital for a matter of days, not hours. I got on the phone and called Pennie Studebaker, BSN, RN, clinical nurse supervisor, 5th floor. I had just taken a new role as Ascension Seton Hays as the bariatric coordinator, but I got a call from the 5th floor unit clerk who she shared with me that her unit did not have a charge nurse and barely had enough staff to care for all the patients. It started that Sunday afternoon as we were all preparing for the first wave of the storm. “During the winter storm of 2021, I witnessed a group of amazing humans come together like never before. The following is a testimonial provided by Virginia Varrientos, BSN, RN, the director of acute care at Ascension Seton Hays. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
